Most sliding glass door repairs in Tampa Bay are smaller jobs than homeowners expect, and far smaller than the new door someone may have tried to sell them. Here is what actually sets the price of a repair, why, and how to know when a repair stops making sense.
How a repair is priced
Every repair we do is quoted as a flat price on site, after we pull the panel and look at the rollers, track, lock and glass. There is no hourly meter and no surprise line items: you hear the number, you say yes, and then the work starts. The number depends on four things.
The parts. A sliding door has a short list of wear parts: rollers, the track, the mortise lock and handle, the interlock and weatherstrip, the screen, and the glass. A lock swap is the simplest job. Rollers plus a track cap is the most common one. Glass is quoted per panel by size and type.
The door size and weight. Eight-foot and multi-panel doors carry heavier panels that need heavy-duty rollers and two technicians to lift. A standard six-foot two-panel door is the simplest.
The track condition. A lightly worn track gets a stainless cap. A track that is bent, cracked or corroded through has to be cut out and replaced, which is more labor.
The door brand and age. Common Florida brands have parts on the truck, so the job is done in one visit. A discontinued 1970s door sometimes needs a custom-matched roller or mortise lock, which occasionally means a return trip.
Why rollers are the usual answer
Nine times out of ten, a door that is heavy, grinding, or jumping the track has worn rollers. The wheels in the bottom of the panel flatten or seize, the panel drops onto the aluminum track, and the track starts getting chewed up. Sand from the pool deck and salt air near the water speed the whole thing along.
Roller replacement with stainless steel tandem rollers is the fix, and if the track is already grooved, a stainless cap over it protects the new wheels. Together those two items turn a door you fight every day into one that closes with a fingertip, and doing both on the same visit is cheaper than two separate calls because the trip and the panel lift are shared.
What makes a repair take longer
Glass type. Single-pane tempered glass is the simplest replacement. Insulated units take more, and laminated impact glass is the premium option. All glass is measured on the first visit and installed on a scheduled return.
Emergency timing. Evening and weekend calls for a shattered panel or a door stuck open carry an after-hours charge that a good company states before coming out, not after. The repair itself is priced like any other call.
Bundled work. Adding a lock adjustment or a screen rescreen to a roller job costs less than booking it separately, so tell us everything the door is doing when you call.
When to stop repairing
A repair is the right call as long as the frame is sound. Stop repairing and start looking at a replacement when:
- The aluminum frame or sill has corroded through and leaks at the bottom during storms.
- The glass is fogged in more than one panel.
- The track is bent and the frame is racked so the panels never seal.
- You want impact glass for storm protection and an insurance credit.
An honest technician will tell you which side of that line your door is on. If someone quotes you a new door for a heavy slider without pulling the panel and looking at the rollers, get a second opinion.
